Fallon enjoys slumming it with her new police sergeant beau
"Ginger Snaps"
Original airdate: 1/26/1989

Episode summary: Krystle slips into a vegetative state after her brain operation, prompting a broken-hearted Blake to return to Denver. Dex is shocked when Virginia reveals herself as someone he knew in the past. Fallon and Sergeant Zorelli hit the sheets.

Recap: Sergeant Zorelli is attempting to ice skate with Fallon at the local arena...despite his complete lack of ability to ice skate. Fallon looks visibly amused by his shakiness on the ice and devilishly declares they're going to play "crack the whip", which translates to her flinging him towards the boards, where he crashes and tumbles head first. He's helped to his feet by two kind strangers, and shoots Fallon a well-deserved stink-eye.

At the Carlton Hotel, Sable and Virgina share their sadness about Krystle slipping into a coma following her unsuccessful brain operation. A few seconds later, Sable gets a phone call regarding the hotel's chef (Maurice), who she orders to be fired 'cause of his wretched cooking, then makes a crack about much Alexis loved Maurice's awful food when she owned the hotel. Virginia remarks on how amusing she finds Sable's hatred of her own cousin, and also how unbelievable it is that Blake was married to such an obviously hideous woman. Sable murmuringly agrees, then changes the subject to the gallery opening they're attending, and abruptly pulls off her own clip-on earrings and hands them to Virginia to wear...which was really weird and a wee bit gross. Sable adds that she'd really like to get copies of the photos she (Virginia) took at Blake's/Krystle's wedding...and couldn't help noticing that she seemed to take many many snapshots of Dex, who she describes as "quite a specimen". Hmmm Dex...agreed.

Over at ColbyCo, Dex is on the phone with Alexis, who reports that she's making good progress reclaiming her ships from the Natumbeian government. After the call, Dex and Jeff pore over Fritz Heath's recent financial transactions and discover that he recently transferred out $4.5 million, which just happens to be the amount of the Vitron Oil payment the company is supposed to receive. A few seconds later, Painter drops by with Fritz's phone log, which includes all of the corresponding names and addresses - except for a Los Angeles number. Dex recognizes the number as Joanna's, then promptly calls her at the Carlton and invites her to lunch.

Across the globe in Switzerland, Blake is railing at Dr. Hampton for the unsuccessful brain operation that has left Krystle in vegetative limbo. He laments that even with all of his wealth, there's not a single thing he can do to help her. Dr. Hampton tells him that after two weeks of hoping for a miracle, it's time for him to return to his family in Denver...and when Blake says, "I can't leave Krystle when she's like this", Dr. Hampton firmly retorts, "Blake, she's dead." Blake barks, "Noooo!", and Dr. Hampton reminds him that while her heart continues to beat, she shows no sign of brain activity. He hastily adds that no one is suggesting unplugging her before the Dynasty reunion show has a chance to air...then reminds Blake about the divorce papers he signed, freeing him from being married to his now comatose wife. He urges Blake to let Krystle go, for his sake and for that of his family, and points out that it was Krystle's last wish.

Back at the Carlton Hotel, Sable rushes off to take a phone call, leaving Virginia wandering around the lobby and staring at Dex as he races up to the second floor landing to greet Joanna with a smooch. Virginia stares up at him looking intrigued, then steps into the lounge so that Dex won't notice her...and while that's happening, Sable notices her weird behavior. As Dex and Joanna descend the staircase, Sable rushes over, greets Dex and Joanna, and purposely draws Virginia into the conversation. As the foursome chitchats, Dex asks Virginia why she's been ogling him so much...and she denies doing any such thing, while Sable chucklingly says that surely it's 'cause he's so darn dashing. When Sable and Joanna step away to talk privately about something, Dex tells Virginia he was sorry to hear about Krystle's unsuccessful brain operation...and when Virginia snidely insinuates that he had more than platonic feelings for Krystle, Dex says he gets the distinct feeling he's offended her. Joanna, meanwhile, tells Sable that Dex invited her to lunch, and the two agree that Dex isn't the 'do lunch' type and assume there's some ulterior motive. After that, Sable and Virginia head off to the gallery opening...and when Virginia glares at Dex on her way out, he stares back at her with an expression of puzzlement.

At Delta Rho, Sammy Jo heads into the stables and looks around for her ranch hands. A mystery man, who has been hiding in one of the stalls, suddenly lunges at her, knocks her out, and races off.

Danny hovers over Sammy Jo as she regains consciousness...and a few seconds later, one of the ranch hands rushes over to make sure she's OK. She tells him she was just attacked by a strange man, so he assures her they'll scour the grounds until they find him.

Back at the skating rink, Fallon puts ice on Sergeant Zorelli's injured ankle as he starts nattering about some boring intel he's been able to cobble together: years ago, the Carringtons, Dexters, and Colbys collectively owned a mining company and named it Coltercon, which didn't produce anything in ten years. When Fallon looks visibly disinterested in that revelation, Zorelli says he'd like to get in touch with Blake again...and Fallon tells him that Krystle just underwent a serious operation in Switzerland and then glumly drops the subject. Zorelli clucks sympathetically and says he had no idea, then invites her out for pizza - but she tells him she can't 'cause she has to get LB home.

While lunching, Dex tells Joanna she's on the wrong team and offers her a job with Dexter Enterprises [I had completely forgotten there was such an entity]. He tells her that the company is expanding rapidly, and that he's done some preliminary headhunting "in the area of land acquisition". He mentions a couple of people he's interested in recruiting, namely Fritz Heath from ColbyCo. Joanna says she's never heard of Fritz Heath, then brusquely tells Dex she's declining his job offer 'cause she assumes he'd be way too complicated to work with.

While riding in a limo after the gallery opening, Sable remarks to Virginia how obvious it is that she's drawn to Dex. She cautions the young woman to be careful, 'cause his ultimate loyalty is always to Alexis.

The mystery man who attacked Sammy Jo is back in the Delta Rho stables, continuing to lurk about. He hides behind a bale of hay when Sammy Jo enters the stables with Jeff, recounting the attack. The mystery man remains hidden, clutching a large knife, as Jeff enters one of the stalls, plunks himself down, and holds out his arms while cooing, "I missed you." Sammy Jo somehow forgets that she had recently declared to Fallon she no longer has any interest in Jeff after he cheated on her and proceeds to mount him...and as the two start getting it on, the mystery man crawls past the stall and exits the stables, accidentally dropping something that looks as though it might reveal his identity.

Back at ColbyCo, Dex asks Fritz whaddup with the $4.5 million he recently withdrew from the company's accounts, and Fritz explains his strange accounting by claiming that he wanted to take advantage of low interest rates. When Dex points out that the $4.5 million was supposed to be new money from the Vitron Oil deal, Fritz pulls out a check and says, "It's right here." He nervously promises Dex he's working on ColbyCo's next big payment, then heads out...and Dex immediately gets on the phone and calls Painter (who's waiting at a pay phone) to inform him that Fritz is on his way downstairs, and that he's still extremely suspicious of the man.

Virginia is studying the many photos she took of Dex at Blake's/Krystle's wedding, some of which she had enlarged. Weird.

Sergeant Zorelli is being ripped a new one by the police captain, who orders him to stop investigating the murder of the corpse found on the Carrington lake property, and incurring expenses while doing so. When Zorelli argues that it'd be nice to uncover who killed the poor man, the captain barks back that they have plenty of other murders to solve, and storms out of the room. A few seconds later, Fallon calls Zorelli from the mansion...and she and Zorelli chat flirtily - until Adam eavesdrops on the conversation and stares at Fallon with both eyebrows raised.

Over at Carrington manor, Adam runs into Virginia and tells her how much he misses Krystle, and that she was very good for Blake. Virginia says she's very curious about Alexis's marriage to Dex - but before Adam can answer, Blake returns home. He's warmly greeted by Adam, Virginia, and little Kristina, who sadly asks, "She didn't come back, did she?" ... and Blake solemnly shakes his head.

Blake gathers the family (sans Fallon) together to thank them for making the wedding so special. He says he has no way of knowing if Krystle will ever come out of her coma, and that they'll likely have to accept the fact that she's gone. Sammy Jo hastily points out, "She's not dead", and Blake concurs, but says they're still going to have to move on with their lives [and muddle through the rest of Season 9] without her. He then holds up a bottle of wine and tells them it was gifted to him and Krystle by a monk in a Portuguese monastery they visited several years ago. The plan was to open the bottle on their 25th wedding anniversary...but since that's not going to happen, he wants to share it with them all now. He pours several glasses, then raises his and toasts, "To Krystle", and everyone raises their glasses before taking sips. Adam ruins the poignant moment by bitchily pointing out that it's too bad Fallon is glaringly absent, and Blake correctly assumes that she's off spending time with the hunky Sergeant Zorelli.

When Dex drops by the mansion, Blake asks him how much he knows about the tri-family mining company, Coltercon. Dex says he only knows what his father told him: it was a venture between three families, which got tangled up in something that had nothing to do with mining. Apparently Pa Dexter had warned about what was at the bottom of the lake (on the Carrington property), and that whatever it was would bring great shame to all three families. Blake shares that his father had advised him to protect his children and "never let them see what you've done wrong". He assumes that Jason Colby and their fathers did something horrendous, and that it's a secret they're going to need to protect. He adds that Roger Grimes' body being fished out of the lake has nothing at all to do with whatever terrible thing is going on at the bottom of the lake - but if the police continue to investigate, "it could open up everything". Blake urges Dex to convince Alexis to stop pursuing Roger's murder, and Dex tells him that he and Alexis are dunzo - but that he'll do anything to protect the shameful tri-family secret.

Back at the Carlton Hotel, Sable grumbles to Joanna about how she had warned Hamilton Stone not to underestimate Alexis, who has reportedly been in touch with the Natumbeian Royal Family in an effort to reclaim her seized ships. Joanna shares that Dex offered her a job during their lunch date and made a point of mentioning Fritz Heath a few times. Sable says he was, no doubt, on a fishing expedition to see how she'd react to the mention of Fritz's name...then recounts how she had made the initial contact with Fritz, who then called her office to request a meeting. Sable says she's pretty sure that Fritz is the weak link at ColbyCo - but first wants to get some background intel on the man.

Fallon pulls up alongside Sergeant Zorelli in the parking lot of the police precinct...and when he complains about his bum ankle from her stunt at the skating rink, she wryly points out that he's limping on the wrong foot. Haha! She then shows him the pizza she brought along and orders him to get into the passenger seat. He eagerly obeys and starts eating the pizza, which he soon complains is cold. The two stare hungrily at each other and lean in for a kiss...and then Zorelli suggests they head over to his place so he can heat up the pizza, and Fallon looks visibly intrigued by the prospect. In the next scene, the two arrive at his modest bachelor apartment and get into some serious kissing action before taking off each other's clothes.

Virginia drops by Dex's apartment and asks, "You really don't remember me, do you?" ... and when he stares at her quizzically, she urges, "Think real hard." At that moment Dex gets a phone call from Joanna, who calls him out for dropping Fritz Heath's name at lunch to get a reaction out of her and says they need to talk about this further. Virginia, meanwhile, is restyling her rattily permed hair and taking off her coat to reveal a bosom bearing black dress...and after Dex ends the call, she asks him if he remembers her now. Dex looks stricken and mutters, "Good God.." as Virginia says that even though she's older and wiser, "It's me, Dex" and reminds him that she used to call herself Ginger. When Dex admits that, yeah, he should have remembered, she snarks, "You damn well should've."

"Ding ding ding."

Fallon and Sergeant Zorelli continue to go at it, half-dressed. He steers her towards the bed, lays her down and mounts her, and moans, "You're soooooo beautiful."

Jeff meets up with Sable in the Carlton Hotel lounge and asks her exactly what the hell she's doing in Denver. She tells him she's pursuing business opportunities while in the process of rebuilding her life...apparently after Jason and Jeff's mother ran off together. Jeff admonishes Sable for her horrible treatment of him over the last several years, then points out the convenient timing of her arrival in Denver: Blake is newly single after Krystle's failed brain operation. Sable slaps him hard across the face and calls him disgusting, then assures him she's not after Blake, adding, "Not in the way that you mean." Jeff warns that, unlike himself, the Carringtons haven't seen her act yet...and after he gets up and storms off, she stares after him worriedly.
