Tanner has neglected to tell Sammy Jo one tiny detail about himself
"Sins of the Fathers"
Original airdate: 3/30/1989

Episode summary: Sable correctly guesses that Blake's deep dark secret involves stolen Nazi treasure. Fallon has a troubling memory about her deceased grandfather. Sammy Jo is stunned to learn that Tanner is a priest.

Recap: Upon returning to the Carlton Hotel, Adam tells Alexis he's surprised she's not in a happier mood after just learning that Elsworth Chisolm was a witness to Blake murdering Roger Grimes - but she just shrugs disinterestedly and pours herself a brandy. She urges him to do his best to get back into Blake's good graces so he can gather up some useful intel...and then a few seconds later, Dex calls. Adam answers the phone...and when Alexis makes it clear that she doesn't want to speak to him, Adam tells Dex she's unavailable and abruptly hangs up. He applauds Alexis for doing the right thing by snubbing Dex, and she irritably snaps, "Shut up, Adam" in a way that made me to laugh out loud. Adam snarks back that she can answer her own damn phone from now on...and Alexis wearily explains that she doesn't want to talk to Dex or about Dex ever again.

That night at Casa Pasta, Fallon is having another nightmare about Roger Grimes, and Sergeant Zorelli is so alarmed by her distress that he cooingly wakes her up. She tells him that the nightmares have gotten worse ever since first seeing Roger's fully preserved corpse, wailing, "He won't let me alone!" She says that Nightmare Roger has a tattoo of a snake on his back and wonders if he had one in real life...and Zorelli confirms he did and points out that she couldn't possibly have seen it on his dead body 'cause it was face up on the morgue's slab. Fallon stares confusedly into space and murmurs, "Then how did I know?"

The next morning, Zorelli cooks breakfast for Fallon while urging her to think really hard about where she might have seen a shirtless Roger Grimes. He asks her if she might possibly have stumbled across him and her mother while they were going at it in the sack, or - even more disturbingly - was he was a pedo who had abused her in some way? When she says she has no memory of anything like that, he points out that sometimes experiences are so painful that the mind blocks them out, and reminds her of the very strong reaction she had when she saw Roger's corpse.

Blake drops by Sable's suite to apologize for his bitchitude after learning that she had hired Gibson to take an exploratory dive in his lake. Sable says she totally understands his suspicion, and that she too would have reacted in the very same way. Blake contritely says he wishes Krystle weren't vegetating in a coma right now, 'cause she's sooooo much better at handling interpersonal relationships than he is [well...who isn't?]. Sable makes it clear that she bears no grudge towards him and invites him to join her for a delish snack that was just prepared by her new chef.

Sammy Jo is at the teen Rec Center, helping Tanner and the teenagers decorate a large room for an upcoming party. When Tanner chides the teens for spending too much time dancing and not enough time decorating, Sammy Jo urges him to lighten up, then coaxes him to dance with her...and he proceeds to demonstrate the kind of off-kilter jigging ability that makes Elaine from that Seinfeld (bad dance) episode look like Fred Astaire. Holy yikes.

Adam arranges to secretly meet with Phoenix Chisolm to remind her that she can earn a substantial reward for providing information about Roger Grimes's demise - but only if she can tell him the entire story. Phoenix tells him she's not about to give up any details for free, so Adam writes her a check for 25% of the reward. She looks satisfied enough with that and tells Adam that on the day Roger was killed, a bunch of other men working on another Carrington project also disappeared...and wonders aloud if maybe their bodies will soon float to the lake's surface. [I wouldn't be at all surprised, Phoenix.] Adam stares back at her with an intrigued expression.

Fallon drops in on Alexis, who had called her while crying and is now indulging in a Bloody Mary at 11am. Fallon asks her if she's upset about something Dex did, and Alexis responds by pointing at a row of framed photos featuring all of her past husbands [which I found amusing that she'd want this showcased in her home] and points out each man's primary deficiency:
  • Blake killed the man she was extramaritally bedding
  • Cecil couldn't stay alive long enough to enjoy his own wedding night
  • "Dear Dumb Sean" died while trying to take her with him
  • Dex was the only man she ever really trusted - but now realizes that after bumping uglies with Sable, he couldn't possibly know what love is

She bitterly mutters, "He slept with her", then throws Dex's framed photo against the wall, where the glass smashes into pieces. She pronounces that all men are the same - except for dear Roger Grimes [who likely didn't live long enough to incur her wrath]. She declares, "Roger is the only man who ever loved me" while staring wistfully at a small photo of him.

Jeff and Monica are playing tennis at the Carlton Hotel...and when she clumsily falls 'cause of a cramp in her leg, Jeff helps her hobble over to a nearby bench and gives her a quick massage. While he's doing that, Adam happens to glance over at the tennis courts from the nearby cafe and stares at them all intrigued-like. Jeff asks Monica about the status of her love life, and she tells him it's basically non-existent...and Jeff glumly reveals that he doesn't feel as though Sammy Jo is "the one". From the cafe, Adam continues to look intrigued by the sight of them chatting and chuckling...and it's unclear if he even knows that the two are half-siblings.

Alexis (who's slightly drunk from her 11am Bloody Mary) is in the Carlton Hotel's basement storage area, rummaging through her old boxes. She fires up the furnace and tosses in some old letters and photographs, then opens a wooden crate containing a lovely looking painting as well as a decades old letter from Roger. In the letter he had warned that Blake was threatening to kill the both of them if he were to ever (again) find them in bed together.

Over at Delta Rho, Sammy Jo is showing Blake the blueprint plans for Tanner's proposed new teen Rec Center. She explains that it's going to be located in a new building downtown, and is hoping that he (Blake) can talk to the owner (some guy named Joe who Blake is friends with) about giving Tanner a break on the rent. Blake agrees to do what he can, then applauds her for helping with the charity and says it would make Krystle proud. A few seconds later, Fallon arrives...and Blake hands her a small stack of photos that were taken during his/Krystle's recent wedding, which marks the last time they were all together as a family. When he sadly says, "We've lost that", Fallon gets all prickly and admonishes him for always treating her like a child...and when he tells her he simply wants her to come home, she petulantly says she'll go where she pleases when she pleases. Blake suddenly breaks into a chuckle and realizes how obnoxious and unbearably tedious it's been for Dynasty viewers to listen to their endless bickering. The two agree on how much they love one another, admit that they've each made mistakes, and hug it out.

Back at the Carlton, one of the hotel employees informs Sable that there's smoke coming from the basement storage area...and when she investigates, she's irked to find a tipsy Alexis, burning boxfuls of old papers and whatnot. Sable tells her to stop burning stuff in what is a scarily defective furnace, then turns her attention to the painting in the wooden crate. She looks visibly startled by the sight of the distinctive looking artwork and asks Alexis where she got it...and Alexis snarlingly tells her it was a gift from Roger Grimes, then snappishly orders her to stop touching her stuff.

"Mmm hmm. Wait - he did what now?"

Sable makes a beeline over to Carrington manor and blurts out to Blake, "It's war crimes, isn't it?" and correctly guesses that the tri-family has been involved in concealing stolen Nazi treasure. Blake doesn't bother denying it and simply asks her how she found out.

After the commercial break, Sable tells Blake that she easily recognized a painting Alexis has in her possession (a gift from Roger Grimes) as a work of Friedrich Stahl. She further explains that Hitler was known to have admired Stahl's work and subsequently stole everything the man ever painted. Sable comes right out and asks Blake if his father ever aided the Nazis, and Blake declines to answer and instead says he's going to convene an evening summit with her and Dex during which all will be explained and revealed.

While dining at the Carlton Hotel patio restaurant, Fallon asks Alexis how well she (meaning herself) would have known Roger Grimes, then asks if he had a snake tattoo. Alexis looks visibly stunned by her knowledge of the tattoo, but then says perhaps she once saw his bare torso while he was swimming. Fallon boldly asks her if perhaps she stumbled upon the two of them while they were in bed together - but Alexis adamantly denies that any such thing could ever have happened, and that she firmly believes Blake murdered Roger. Fallon refuses to engage in an argument about Blake's alleged murderous tendencies and instead asks if Roger might have done something that could have frightened her as a child. Alexis assures her that her deceased lover wasn't a pedo and then testily tells Fallon to let the poor man rest in peace.

Jeff is decked out in a tuxedo when he arrives at Delta Rho to escort Sammy Jo to what he assumed was a formal charity event...and when she enters the living room wearing a super casual outfit and tells him they're attending a teen party at the Rec Center, he's miffed about being overdressed. She informs him that Tanner will be arriving any minute to drive them over to the Center...and a few seconds later, Jeff greets Tanner at the front door and amusedly tells Sammy Jo to brace herself. Tanner then saunters into the living room wearing a priest collar...and as Sammy Jo stares at him in stunned incredulity, Jeff decides to bail on the teen party 'cause 1) he has zero interest in going to a teen party, and 2) it's clear that she's "in safe hands tonight".

Alexis returns to her suite and is less than thrilled to find Dex waiting for her. He professes his love for her and admits it was wrong to hit the sheets with Sable - but then points out that he's been a rock to her for eight long years, up to and including when he dutifully helped her pick up the pieces after Sean tried to destroy her company. Alexis makes it clear that she no longer has any interest in resuming their relationship or even being friends, and walks over to her door and opens it wide as she orders him to get the hell out.

Party time at the teen Rec Center! As Tanner jigs awkwardly, Father Shea not-so-subtly emphasizes to Sammy Jo that Father Tanner is a 100% fully dedicated priest. A few seconds later, Tanner invites Sammy Jo to dance and mumblingly tries to explain why he never thought to mention to her that he's a man of the cloth. Sammy Jo pretends she's totes OK with it - but then the two stare longingly into each others' eyes, prompting Father Shea to glance over concernedly.

Later at the mansion, Blake reveals to Dex and Sable that his corrupt jerkwad of a father (Tom Carrington) ran a shipping line, and in the 1950s was commissioned to transport "German scholars" (aka Nazi war criminals) to South America. He was paid for this service in the form of artwork, jewelry, and other stolen Nazi treasures, which he figured he should prolly hide...'cause yeesh. Jason Colby and Sam Dexter were later involved in the construction of the fruitless mine project and refrained from asking any questions about the stolen Nazi treasure they knew that Tom Carrington had in his possession. As for Roger Grimes, he just happened to be on the property when "the collection" was being moved into the secret vault. He somehow decided 'why not help myself to some stolen Nazi loot?' and was killed by Tom Carrington soon after. Dex suggests to Blake that he simply come clean and tell the police about "the collection" and how Tom Carrington murdered Roger Grimes after being caught stealing stuff - but Blake says he doesn't want to sully the reputation of his family, and insists that the origins of "the collection" must remain a secret. He solemnly decrees, "What Tom Carrington did must remain buried with that collection."

"Sounds like your family name should be mud."

The next morning, Blake calls up Jeff to ask him to please accompany him and Dex to the lake this evening, explaining that Dex will take a dive to check on the secret vault at the bottom of the lake that houses "the collection". After the call, Adam enters Blake's office to offer a sheepish apology for his creepy treatment of Virginia. He says he has no idea why he acts like such a predatory horse's ass towards women all the damn time, and attributes it to the pressure he's always under. As Blake looks wholly unimpressed by that mea culpa, Adam tells him he's been spending more time with Alexis lately, then shares that Alexis wants him (Adam) to get back into his (Blake's) good graces so that he can more easily spy and gather useful intel. He adds that Alexis has tracked down a construction old-timer named Elsworth Chisolm who says he witnessed him (Blake) kill Roger Grimes...and he'd would be happy to arrange a meeting with Elsworth to hash it out and get to the truth, 'cause he doesn't actually want to see his own father be thrown in prison.

Back at Casa Pasta, Fallon tells Sergeant Zorelli that she's not sure which dead person she's more troubled by: Roger Grimes or her grandfather. She recently dreamed that she was in a dark tunnel and couldn't find her way out...but then heard her grandfather's voice. As she processes the memory she suddenly gets visibly distressed and cries, "Oh God!"

Over at the Carlton Hotel's patio restaurant, Sable strongly urges Alexis to stop suggesting that Blake killed Roger Grimes...then informs her that Fritz Heath has provided her with some very interesting intel about a clumsy takeover he and Sean had attempted last season. She warns that whoever runs the company the two men were cheating doesn't appear to be aware of it - but if it were to come out, ColbyCo (and Alexis by extension) would be ruined. Alexis just shrugs unconcernedly, calls Sable "lonely and desperate", and tells her to go ahead and reveal Fritz's intel to the world if that's what she really wants to do.

That night at the lake, Blake and Jeff are floating around in a dinghy, waiting for Dex to emerge from the watery depths. When he finally does, he grimly announces, "We've got a problem" and explains that the vault's seal has been blown open. Blake grimaces and moans, "My God. It'll all come out now. Everything" ... and as that's happening, it looks as though Sergeant Zorelli is spying on the three of them from a distance through a pair of binoculars.
