Recap: Carrie looks out her window and voice-overs about "the woman" noticing that someone new has arrived at her townhouse mansion...while, in present day Manhattan, we see that a British man wearing tweed and carrying a leather book bag is letting himself through the gate and heading towards the ground floor apartment (beneath Carrie's townhouse). After that, we get a montage of Carrie wandering through her massive townhouse wearing stiletto heels [for some unfathomable reason], which looks to be extremely noisy and irritating for her downstairs neighbor. Later, the neighbor pounds on Carrie's kitchen door and demands to know, for the love of all that is holy, why she finds it necessary to walk around her house in clickety-clackety heels, and then wails, "Have you no rugs? My God!" Lol.. Carrie tells him she hasn't yet found the right kind of rugs, then introduces herself...and so he grumblingly introduces himself as Duncan Reeves and snarkishly tells her he much preferred the previous homeowner, who was as quiet as a mouse. Carrie wryly points out that she was so quiet 'cause she was bedridden, then in defence of herself says she's actually a very good neighbor who doesn't host loud parties or bowl on her expansive wooden floors. Duncan looks unamused and tells her he neeeeeeds to be able to sleep during the day 'cause he's typically up all night working. When he begs her to remove her heels whenever she's ambling on the floor above him, she unhelpfully chortles, "Now you've gone too far." Later, while lunching out with Miranda, Seema, and Charlotte, Carrie reports, "My downstairs neighbor haaaaaates me", which prompts Miranda to share that her Airbnb neighbor constantly blasts heavy metal music. A peeved looking Carrie asks, "What does that have to do with me?" and says she's not playing any type of loud head-banging music...so Miranda hastily explains that she was merely agreeing with her that bad neighbors are the worst, then urges Carrie to continue her rant. When Carrie wonders aloud where this Duncan Reeves came from, Seema tells her [she knows from making the house sale that] he's a Brit from London who spends six months of the year in New York...and both Charlotte and Miranda look visibly impressed that Carrie is neighbors with such a prolific writer. Carrie laments having to live above an insane man half the year...and when Charlotte asks exactly what makes him insane, Carrie says he requested that she take off her heels while aimlessly roaming around her townhome mansion. Charlotte points out that it's a helluva lot more sanitary to not wear outdoor footwear indoors - but Carrie nonsensically insists that she has "a woman's right to shoes". Miranda coos about how much she looooves Duncan Reeves's meaty biographies, says she's been waiting years for him to finish his next book, and barks, "Take your damn shoes off" - but Carrie clings onto the notion that she somehow neeeeeeds to walk around her enormous townhouse with very high heels on her feet. While strolling down the street, Carrie tells Charlotte she's A-OK with where she and Aidan left things after her horrendous visit to Virginia...and that it's a relief not to have to worry so much how she's supposed to manage their long distance relationship. She adds that even if Aidan can't be her everyday fella, there's still a strong element of romance there...and Charlotte says she can't fully relate to that, 'cause of how much she looooooves having Harry in her life every day and wouldn't want to be parted from him for any length of time. Miranda is in her Airbnb, getting some work done, when her neighbor starts blasting his heavy metal music again. Miranda reacts by scribbling an angry letter and slipping it under his door...and a few seconds later, the music abruptly stops. Miranda whispers, "Thank you" and resumes her work. While out for an evening stroll with Mr. Burton, Harry tells Charlotte he needs to tell her something important, then recaps how he..
He decided to investigate this as a potential medical issue...and it turns out he has prostate cancer. As Charlotte starts to freak out, Harry assures her it's been caught early, and that this type of cancer has a 98% survival rate. He then asks her to keep this news a secret...meaning he doesn't want her to tell the kids or any of their friends 'cause he'd rather not be regarded as "the cancer guy". Charlotte tells him she'd be more than happy to quit her gallery job to nurse him back to health, and also to cancel their glamping plans this weekend - but Harry's like, "No and no" and says he wants them to continue living their lives as if everything is perfectly normal. Lisa tells Herbert that on Friday she won't be back in New York (from Atlanta) until 4pm, so he's going to have to take the kids to Governor's Island to get them settled in for their glamping weekend with the Goldenblatts. Herbert stares at her confusedly and says he has no idea what in blazes she's talking about, and that he can't glamp this weekend 'cause he has a bunch of campaign stuff he needs to do. Lisa's all, "I couldn't care less about your campaign stuff" and insists he get the kids settled into their luxury tent while she's off doing whatever in Atlanta. Seema is at the bank, applying for a loan so she can start up her own real estate business. The bank lady (Linda) warns that, since she has no collateral, she'll have to run the loan request by her boss...then murmurs, "He's just awful." They often are, Linda. They often are. Carrie drops by Duncan's place to give him a proper Welcome Wagon type visit, and presents him with a basket full of goodies. She tells him that everything in the basket has been locally sourced from their neighbourhood, and he remarks that he has zero time to do any real exploring 'cause he's such a busy writer. Carrie pretends to be surprised by that revelation and tells him that she's a former raunch columnist who's been trying to pass herself off as a literary author for years - but one who sleeps at night and needlessly walks around her apartment in heels during the day. Duncan looks unamused by the quip, then tells her that he too has a gift...and hands her a small Amazon package that he insists will "enormously help our situation". When Carrie opens the package, she's less than thrilled at the pair of pink booty slippers inside. She tells Duncan that she's allergic to "whatever this is" ... and that she appreciates the thought, but doesn't think she's actually capable of movement that doesn't entail having to totter around in ridiculously high stilettos. She does promise to buy a thick rug and do her best to no longer disturb him, and Duncan looks satisfied enough with that and then asks whassup with the courtyard being ripped up. Carrie explains that it was a rat's nest that had to be exterminated, and that she hired a landscaper to transform it into a beautiful outdoor space they can both enjoy. Rock and Lily tell Charlotte they have zero interest in going glamping this weekend, and Charlotte's all, "Tough shit" and insists they participate in this all-important family activity. Lily argues that she has plans with her poly-sexual squeeze Diego, who typically splits his weekends between her and (his boyfriend) Eric...and complains that if she's not there, it puts her at a disadvantage. Charlotte makes it clear that there's not a shit tiny enough to give about how low she's debasing herself with this guy [sorry, no - that was me, projecting], and tells Lily in no uncertain terms that she is going glamping this weekend 'cause it means a lot to her father. Carrie is on the phone with Miranda, telling her about the fugly slippers Duncan gifted her...and Miranda blurts out, "No fucking way!", then explains that she just got a message from the Airbnb owner to tell her he can't do anything about her heavy metal music playing neighbor 'cause he's not supposed to be Airbnb-ing his apartment. Carrie chastises her for reading text messages while talking to her on the phone, then invites her to bunk at her townhouse mansion until such time as she finds a permanent home. Miranda's like, "Mmm...I dunno" 'cause of how much she loooooves having her own personal space, then asks Carrie if Seema could find her a new home. Carrie nixes that and says she doesn't like to mix business with friendships, which I found to be asinine, since I'm sure that newly independent Seema would be delighted by the opportunity to earn a commission. When the Airbnb neighbor starts up with his heavy metal music again, Miranda delivers another sternly worded note under his door...and he responds by flinging his door open and standing fully naked in the doorway while waving around a meat cleaver. The furious weirdo warns Miranda that if she puts another note under his door he'll cut her to pieces. Miranda reacts by screaming in terror...and the next day arrives at Carrie's townhouse mansion with her belongings. Soon after that, a delivery truck pulls up with the dining table Carrie had been stalking online. She's thrilled when she learns that the purchase was made by Aidan Shaw...and the delivery guy confirms that, yep, it's a very romantic gesture. A few seconds later, Duncan arrives...and Miranda gets all fan girl and gushes about what a huge admirer she is of his work. She asks him if he wouldn't mind signing her copy of his Churchill bio, and he tells her he'd be delighted. Lisa and Marion have just landed in New York. When Lisa pushes her way to get off the plane quickly, Marion cheekily informs the other passengers that she has an emergency glamping outing to get to. Over on Governor's Island, Lisa arrives and greets her family and the York-Goldenblatts. Lily grumbles that this glamping trip is a hostage situation, while Harry complains that he's being targeted by giant mosquitoes. When Herbert suggests they make s'mores, he soon realizes they can't do that 'cause Lisa forgot to bring the most necessary ingredient: chocolate. Lisa argues back that she had no idea she was supposed to bring chocolate...blah blah... and Charlotte yells at them both to shut it and points out that there's a nearby gift shop that sells all the chocolate they could possibly need for their stupid s'mores. Carrie texts Samantha, asking her what she knows about Duncan Reeves, and Samantha replies, "They say he's a lot of fun." When Carrie explains that he's living one floor under her, Samantha sassily retorts, "I wish he was under me", 'cause nothing is more hilarious than a 60 something year old who never gets tired of talking like a sexual predator. Carrie passes along Samantha's assessment of Duncan to Miranda, who's getting herself all gussied up in an orange jumpsuit in anticipation of spending the night at Joy's. Carrie decides that the outfit needs a scarf...and when Miranda expresses concern that she might lose it or ruin it in some way, Carrie acknowledges that there's definitely a precedent there - but then breezily assures her it's no big deal, 'cause it's just some rag she got at a tag sale on the street. Miranda and Joy are smooching while her two greyhound dogs sit a few feet away and stare at them in curious disdain. Joy moves the pooches into the hallway - but that doesn't help 'cause at that point they both start howling unhappily. Joy apologizes to Miranda and says that her dogs are not usually this fussy, and lets it drop that she doesn't usually ask people to spend the night. As Miranda beams happily at that tidbit, Joy laments not getting cats. Later, Carrie's sleep is being disturbed by Shoo, who keeps climbing atop her head...so she carries Shoo to the hallway, where she - ack! - runs into a fully naked Miranda wearing black socks. As Carrie does her best to shield her eyes from a startling visual that's often the thing of nightmares, Miranda explains that she couldn't spend the night at Joy's place 'cause her dogs kept howling...and Carrie bumps into her bedroom door in a desperate effort to escape the presence of her friend's nakedness. The next morning, Carrie finds Miranda in the kitchen eating a yogurt and half a banana. She shoots Miranda the stink-eye and asks her if that was the last yogurt and banana, and Miranda's all, "Uh, yeah..?" and says she figured the food just belonged to the house, and reminds Carrie that not so long ago she used to have a cigarette for breakfast. Gross. Incidentally, it remains wholly unclear to me why..
Carrie notices Adam out in the courtyard just sitting idly, so Miranda explains that Duncan had yelled at him earlier for being too noisy. Carrie looks annoyed and opens the window to give Adam the green light to proceed with his landscaping. Charlotte enters her family's luxury tent and frenetically demands they join her for a walk along the pier - but the kids mumble that they're not interested and would prefer to just lounge around and fiddle with their phones...while Harry is too worried about mosquitoes and would much prefer to watch sports on his phone. When the kids ask Charlotte why she's being so weirdly frenzied about them cherishing this family time when their father isn't even interested in being here, Harry warns his wife to chillax as she contemplates her response...and so she tightly announces that she's off for a solitary walk. Lisa takes a photo of her family glamping...and when Herbert asks to see the photo and then scrolls through her photo library, he happens to spot a selfie featuring her and Marion sitting together on the plane earlier. Lisa explains that the sexy man is her new editor, and that there's nothing resembling hanky panky going on there. When Herbert seems skeptical of that, Lisa announces that she's ending this insulting conversation by taking a walk...and then runs into Charlotte, who's standing by the pier and spacily staring out at the water. Carrie brings Seema to her mansion so she can show off her new table...which Miranda is sitting behind with all of her work stuff spread out. After Seema heads out to the courtyard to smoke and keep her fingers crossed that her business loan gets approved, Carrie glares disapprovingly at the mess of Miranda's files and papers spread across her precious new table and tries to tidy everything...and spills a soda in the process. Miranda pulls out the scarf Carrie loaned to her to stop the dripping, and Carrie's all, "Wha-a-a-at are you doing?!" Miranda reminds her that she had told her she bought the nothing scarf at a tag sale, and Carrie fumes, "Nothing I have is nothing", and also bitches at Miranda for so rudely drinking her last Mexican coke. Adam's nephew/landscaping assistant (Jaime) warns Seema that smoking is bad for a person's health, and she concurs but also explains that she's under a lot of pressure at the moment. Adam wanders over and says that he too could use a drag 'cause he's under enormous pressure - particularly from Duncan, who keeps making angry faces at him from the window. Seema tells Adam she's waiting to hear about a business loan, and he flirtily asks her if she's ever tried relaxing with yoga - just as Duncan's face appears in the window to shoot Adam another stink-eye for no apparent reason. Inside, Carrie and Miranda agree that they should definitely not be roommates...and when Seema enters the kitchen a few seconds later, Carrie asks her if she could please help her homeless friend find a place to live, like yesterday. Seema sadly announces that she didn't get her business loan - but assures Miranda that she'd be happy to seek out some suitable apartments. While soaking in a hot tub, Lisa confides in Charlotte that she has a crush on her sexy new editor. Charlotte assures her it's perfectly fine - that is, as long as it remains an innocent crush. Lisa remarks to Charlotte that she doesn't seem like herself and asks her if anything's wrong, and Charlotte manages to hold back her tears and says she merely has a lot on her mind and doesn't want to talk about it. Carrie is in the courtyard, telling Adam she's fairly certain that the garden will be amaaaaazing - just as the fire alarm in Duncan's apartment goes off. Carrie rushes inside, sees smoke billowing from a pot on the stove, and uses her stilettos to stamp out a dishcloth that caught on fire as she removed the burning pot. When Duncan, who was so busy working at his computer with headphones on that he somehow didn't notice the smell of smoke and/or hear the very loud fire alarm go off, she cheekily asks, "Aren't you glad I'm wearing heels?" Duncan responds with a hearty chuckle. Later, Carrie and Duncan go out to eat. She tells him she heard that he's a lot of fun whenever he's in London...and he explains that, yep, he does have fun in London - but comes to New York to write. When he asks her what she writes, she tells him she's mostly into memoirs and essays...but that she's nervously trying something new: a historical fiction novel about an unmarried woman who was never given a name. Later, Carrie returns to her empty house. She carefully removes her stiletto heels before tiptoeing off. Thanks for reading!
