"Kelly's journal is even juicier than The National Enquirer."
"I Only Have Eyes For You"
Original airdate: 4/23/1997

Episode summary: Kelly and Brandon become a couple again. Valerie's attempt to stir up trouble between Kelly and her roommates backfires. Brandon, Steve, and David are arrested for grand theft auto after an unauthorized test drive.

Recap: Brandon and Kelly wake up spooning in Brandon's bed at Casa Walsh. I guess this means they're officially a couple again. Brandon contentedly murmurs, "Good morning" so Kelly slips into her annoying baby talk mode, which she seems to do whenever she's feeling amorous, and squeaks, "Am I in your bed?" He grunts in the affirmative, so she asks him if they're back together, and he murmurs, "Uh huh." Down the hall, Valerie wakes up to the sound of Brandon and Kelly happily gabbling at each other and rolls her eyes. She gets out of bed and steps into the hall...where she runs into Steve, who grins broadly and excitedly chirps, "Love is in the air! Happy days are here again!" Valerie mutters something about how shitty it is that Kelly and Brandon are back together again - just as Kelly emerges from the master bedroom. Awkward. Kelly politely says, "Good morning" then snidely tells Valerie she'd better get used to her being around again.

California University. Kelly runs into Clare and Donna, and they chide her for spending so much of her time with Brandon lately. Donna grumbles about her stupid fashion class with stupid Professor Langely and laments having to go to the business library to research her next assignment. Clare and Donna remind Kelly that they're all supposed to get together tonight to watch the gymnastics championships on TV - and Kelly's all, "Oops!" and says she already made plans to hang with Brandon. Clare scrunches her face in annoyance, so Kelly hastily promises she'll somehow make it up to them.

Across town, Brandon and Steve have just finished doing some grocery shopping at Whole Foods...and as they walk to the car they discuss plans to go to the Auto Museum with David tomorrow. Ho hum.

Student Union. Valerie complains to Clare and David about her dating dry spell...and a few seconds later, Donna arrives at the table and grumbles again about her horrible fashion class and how much she regrets taking it. I sense a future storyline there. Clare and Donna excitedly discuss their plans to stay in tonight to watch gymnastics, and Clare snidely adds that Kelly is once again ditching them to spend time with her boyfriend. Valerie perks up at that hint of bitterness and pretends as though she's totally into gymnastics, and wonders aloud where on earth she's going to watch the championships now that Brandon and Kelly regularly take over the TV watching area at Casa Walsh. Donna and Clare take the bait because they're clueless nitwits and invite Valerie to come on over to the beach house and watch gymnastics with them, 'cause what could go wrong with that?

The Walsh house. Kelly arrives at an empty house and for some reason goes straight up to Valerie's room. She picks up some papers that have blown onto the floor, closes the window, and notices Valerie's journal lying on her nightstand. She picks it up, but then thinks better of it and quickly puts it back down. Brandon arrives home and asks her what she's doing in Valerie's room, and she outright admits she was doing some light snooping - but that she stopped herself. She then suggests inviting the gang over for a big dinner tomorrow night, and Brandon likes the sound of that and gives her a smooch.

Beach house. Clare, Donna, and Valerie are decked out in spandex workout gear, and they're all psyched to watch gymnastics and drink champagne. They gather up blank score cards and markers (apparently they like to score the athletes themselves), and when they're a marker short, Donna sends Valerie to Kelly's room to look for an extra one. Probably not the smartest idea. Valerie wanders around Kelly's room and spots her journal on the nightstand. She picks it up and briefly reads the first page, then quickly puts it down when Donna calls to her from the living room, asking if she found a marker. Valerie yells back that she did, dumps her champagne in Kelly's flowers and heads out, staring back at the journal with a contemplative expression on her face.

The Walsh house. Brandon and Kelly are spending the evening canoodling on the couch and watching TV. As Brandon channel-surfs, he ends up on the gymnastics championships, and Kelly scrunches her face in distaste and says she suddenly realizes she doesn't like the sport. She grabs the remote control from him and switches to an odd looking show that features fighting puppets. She remarks that it reminds her of the Magic Morton Hour: a show she used to watch when she was a tot. She tells Brandon that when she was little she wanted to have one of Morton's magic wands so that she could wave it over her parents and make them love each other again. [Insert obligatory awww here.] Her deadbeat dad promised her he'd get her a wand, but of course it never materialized. Brandon says he'll do his best to dig up one of the wands, but Kelly doesn't think it's a likely possibility since the show's been off the air for years.

Beach house. Valerie stumbles around and slurs her words, and is pretending to be a lot drunker than she is...and Clare and Donna, being the clueless nitwits they are, fall for it and insist that she spend the night. Valerie decides that since Kelly's spending the night at Casa Walsh, she'll just sleep in her bed! Donna and Clare make silent wuh?! faces at each other but don't actually come out and tell Valerie that this is not a good idea. Valerie changes into Kelly's pajamas (the fuck?) and grabs her journal...and as she's doing that, a business card belonging to Bill Taylor (Kelly's dad) falls out. Valerie looks intrigued by it, pockets, it, then heads over to the bed with the journal, smiling devilishly as she reads Kelly's private thoughts.

Kelly returns to the beach house the following morning. Valerie hears her voice, quickly puts the diary back on her nightstand, and springs out of the bed. Out in the living room, Kelly is telling Clare and Donna that she just came by to pick up some stuff for another sleepover at Casa Walsh - and invites them over for dinner later. She looks startled when Valerie suddenly appears in the living room wearing her pajamas, and gets even more weirded out when she learns that Valerie slept in her bed. Out of politeness, she invites Valerie to her dinner party and asks her if she and David are both able to take the night off from the After Dark...and Valerie says they can, then offers to go to Whole Foods with Clare and Donna to stock up on groceries.

Kelly goes into her room to gather some clothes for another night at Casa Walsh. She notices her journal on her nightstand, stares at it thoughtfully, then wisely stuffs it into her overnight bag.

The Peach Pit. Nat has used his wife's connections to track down Magic Morton and is on the phone with him, asking him if he still has any magic wands to give away. Brandon then gets on the phone with Morton - hey, it's Dom DeLuise! - and fake gushes about what a huge fan he was of his show. A flattered Morton offers to meet with Brandon and tells him to come by his house at 4pm. After the call, Nat sternly warns Brandon to be on time for the meeting 'cause Morton abhors tardiness, which can only mean that something unforeseen will arise that will prevent Brandon from showing up at the prearranged time. Steve and David enter the diner, and a few seconds later, all three lads head to the Auto Museum.

As Brandon, Steve, and David amble around the museum, Steve asks David how things are progressing with Donna in the having sex department, but David shuts that down and says he doesn't want to talk about his [sexless] relationship [with his staunchly virginal girlfriend]. The three are then dazzled by a fancy red car on display, and Steve finds the nearest sales guy, pulls out a wad of cash, and asks him if he and his friends can take the car out for a test drive. The sales guy mulls it over, agrees to the bribe, and pockets the cash.

Donna, Clare, and Valerie are taking an aerobics class together...and afterward they head over to the sauna for a relaxing steam.

The Walsh house. Kelly is unpacking her bags of groceries when Brandon calls to let her know he'll be home a bit later...and that he may have a fun surprise for her. She perks up and goes, "The wand?!" and he secretively replies, "Maybe."

The Auto Museum sales guy gives Brandon, Steve, and David the keys for the fancy red car, along with all the codes, etc. to start it, then casually tells them to enjoy their test drive. Since it's a two-seater, it's decided that Brandon and Steve will take the first drive - and Brandon suggests they drive over to Magic Morton's place to get Kelly's wand...and then Steve can come back to the museum and pick up David. A few seconds after they drive off, the sales guy gets reprimanded by his boss...well, ex-boss, since we soon learn that he's just been fired. I guess this doesn't bode well for the three stooges and their test drive.

Sauna. Donna asks Valerie why they don't all hang out more often, and Valerie replies, "In a word: Kelly." She says that if Kelly were here right now, she wouldn't be. No duh. Valerie then gleefully starts spilling the beans about all the juicy insults Kelly's been writing in her journal, namely that Clare is vain and obsessively fusses with her hair, and that Donna is obsessive about her grades. Those actually seem like pretty tame observations, considering. Donna tut tuts Valerie for reading Kelly's diary, but can't help herself from looking hurt when she contemplates what Kelly wrote about her.

As Brandon and Steve test drive the fancy red car, they hear a police siren behind them. A puzzled Brandon pulls over, and two police cars surround them. The cops get out of their squad cars, pull out their guns and aggressively order Brandon and Steve to get out of the car. Brandon's all, "Wha-at's happening?!" and one of the cops informs him they're being charged with grand theft auto. Haha!

Police station. Brandon and Steve are led to an interrogation room. They tell the cops that a sales guy from the Auto Museum gave them the keys, codes, and permission to take the test drive...but they didn't catch his name. Brandon says he really needs to make a phone call 'cause he's supposed to be somewhere right now, but Steve says their priority should be contacting a lawyer, and not getting a toy wand from Magic Morton. Another cop enters the room and announces that a representative from the Auto Museum is on his way so that they can quickly wrap up this idiotic storyline.

Beach house. Clare and Donna are primping for Kelly's dinner party. Clare stares at herself in the mirror and asks Donna if she really does obsess about her fugly hair, and Donna says it's normal for roommates to get on each other's nerves once in awhile...but then admits that Kelly has, in fact, remarked on her hair obsession. Clare then confirms that Kelly told her she thinks she (Donna) obsesses about her grades too much. The two go into Kelly's room to snoop around for her journal - but, of course, are unable to find it. Clare concedes that roommates can get on each other's nerves, but negative comments can still hurt. She glumly says she has no desire to go to Casa Walsh for dinner and pretend that everything is OK, and Donna says she just lost her appetite...which is unfortunate, since that girl really can't afford to get any skinnier.

Clare calls Kelly, who's happily cooking up a storm at Casa Walsh, and says that neither she nor Donna can make it tonight. She snidely says she's too busy fussing with her hair and that Donna is busy obsessing about her upcoming finals. Kelly asks what the hell's going on, and Clare passive-aggressively retorts, "This kind of flaky behavior is so typical of us!" then hangs up. Kelly stares in confusion at the phone receiver.

After being cleared of grand theft auto by the Auto Museum representative, Steve and David drop Brandon off at Magic Morton's house. Morton answers the door a crack...and when he figures out who Brandon is, he bitches at him for being four hours late. Brandon says he can explain his lateness, and that he really just needs a wand for his girlfriend. He tells Morton the sad tale of how Kelly was promised a wand when she was a little girl, but never received one and has lived a sad life of disappointment ever since. He begs Morton to please help him out, and that a wand might help Kelly repair her relationship with her deadbeat father. Morton reacts sympathetically to Brandon shamelessly playing the father card and invites him inside.

The Walsh house. A pissed off Kelly puts away all the food she had cooked for her dinner party. Valerie enters the kitchen and breezily asks her how dinner went, so Kelly asks her if she knew that Donna and Clare had cancelled on her. Valerie shoots her a smug smile and replies, "I had an idea" then says, "I can't believe all those mean things you wrote about them in your journal." Kelly's all, "Wha-a?!" and is enraged that Valerie would violate her privacy in so brazen a fashion, and storms out of the room.

Beach house. Clare and Donna are still moaning and bitching about Kelly's journaling, then discuss how Kelly came home last night and went straight to bed. Donna says they probably don't have a right to be angry since Kelly is entitled to her private thoughts. At that moment, Kelly emerges from her room, and Donna tells her they feel bad about the bitchy way they reacted to the stuff that Valerie told them. Clare, however, pouts and says, "I thought we were your best friends" and Kelly assures her they are - in fact, they're like sisters. She says that since they're the closest people in her life right now, it makes perfect sense that she'd write bitchy stuff about them in her journal. She then gushes about how lucky she is to have them in her life, and they all clump together and hug it out. Now that that crisis has been resolved, Kelly says she's off to Casa Walsh to make amends with Brandon for the bitchy tongue-lashing she gave him for coming home so late last night. After she leaves, Donna tells Clare she has an idea of how they can make it up to Kelly.

The Walsh house. Clare calls Steve and tells him she has a covert mission for him that must remain secret from Brandon. Yawn.

Donna and David have just picked up groceries from Whole Foods (I wonder if they're an official sponsor of the show or something) and are walking through the parking lot to their car. Donna explains to him that she and Clare were mostly hurt that Kelly abruptly ditched them to spend every waking moment with Brandon...and she also feels bad that the two of them don't have the kind of intimacy that Kelly and Brandon are currently enjoying 'cause of her stubborn chastity vow. She assures David she won't want to be a virgin forever, and he tells her not to feel threatened by anyone else's life choices.

Kelly apologizes to Brandon for her bitchitude last night, then says she worked things out with Donna and Clare. Brandon presents her with a Magic Morton wand, and she excitedly shrieks, "I can't believe it!" and looks very touched. Brandon also produces the letter that her father wrote to Morton all those years ago, requesting a wand for his special little daughter. Kelly tears up as she reads it and hugs Brandon.

David, Donna, Steve, and Clare are busily preparing a surprise dinner for Kelly and Brandon. Valerie arrives home and asks whassup, so they tell her they're doing something special for Brandon and Kelly...and that doesn't go over so good with Valerie. Clare, who now resents Valerie for trying to stir shit up between her and Donna and Kelly, treats her coldly and says she wishes she didn't enjoy her shit-disturbing as much as she does. Steve goes upstairs and solemnly tells Brandon they need to have an informal house meeting, and Kelly makes a face and says, "Sounds serious." They head downstairs, and when they enter the kitchen, everyone (sans Valerie) yells, "Surprise!" then gather together for a group hug. Valerie, meanwhile, is standing off to the side, looking as left out as she can muster and shoots everyone the stink-eye. She then glumly retreats to her room, where she comes across Bill Taylor's business card. She picks up the phone and dials his number, then tells his secretary (or whoever) that she's a friend of Bill Taylor's daughter, and that she's interested in investing in his company.
