Carrie delights in guilting Aidan for smashing her rainbow-generating antique glass

Episode summary: Lisa is incommunicado in her editing studio when her father suffers a stroke and dies. Aidan confesses to Carrie that he slept with his ex-wife. Seema helps Miranda find a new apartment.

Recap: As it rains heavily in Gramercy Park, Duncan and Carrie are dining together on mutton stew...and Carrie clearly isn't enjoying her downstairs neighbor's home cooking, which she wryly describes as "very muttony". Duncan tells her he wanted them to break bread so he could ask a favor: would she mind reading the draft of his first chapter of his new Margaret Thatcher biography? When he explains that he needs "an outside female eye", Carrie says she'd be happy to, as long as he'd be willing to read her first chapter about an unnamed woman living in New York in the 1800s...and to lower his expectations to the lowest possible level.

Later, Carrie calls Aidan and tells him about the yucky mutton stew that Duncan cooked for them, then has to explain who Duncan is. Aidan excitedly informs her that he's free to fly to New York, 'cause his troubled spawn Wyatt took the initiative and signed up for a wilderness program in Wyoming, and will be out of everyone's hair for an entire week. Hurray! Aidan happily describes this is a breakthrough that will surely change the family dynamic for the better [except: not].

Miranda, who's been crashing at Joy's place, wakes up in Joy's bed to the sight of her two Whippets, who are staring down at her with looks of disdain. When Joy brings her a cup of coffee, Miranda informs her that Seema may have found her an apartment, and Joy's like, "Hallelujah" ... 'cause it looks as though she likes living with Miranda about as much as Carrie did. Miranda then tells her she'd like to take the next step in their relationship and introduce her to Brady. 

Charlotte is about to enter the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center when she happens to run into Bitsy Von Muffling. Charlotte fibs that she's not here 'cause she knows anyone with cancer - but rather to volunteer to help the cancer-afflicted. When she tells Bitsy she'll likely see her at the Tiffany & Co. tea event later this episode, Bitsy's all, "The what?" and looks miffed that she didn't receive an invitation.

Seema is playing a sad song on her iPhone while she's being chauffeured in her Mercedes for the last time. She sadly tells her driver she can no longer afford the lease - but promises that as soon as The Patel Group is up and running, she'll reinstate him.

Seema shows Miranda what looks like a pretty spectacular apartment, and describes it as a whisper listing that hasn't yet been made public. Miranda glances around the gorgeous place and decides it's perfect - until Seema informs her that the sellers want $150,000 over the asking price. Miranda looks taken aback by that and says it goes against her principles to pay any amount of money over the asking price, considering that Manhattan real estate is already so ridiculously expensive. An annoyed Seema warns that this is the best deal she's ever going to find in her desired neighborhood and price range - but Miranda orders her to find a place that's just as perfect and doesn't have a seller who wants extra. 

"Paying more than the asking price goes against my strongly-felt principles."

"Then I'd suggest suspending them until after you sign the paperwork."

While leaving the Cancer Center, Harry recaps to Charlotte that his two choices for treating his prostate cancer are: radiation or surgery. He tells her he's carefully weighed each option and would prefer to have the surgery and risk possible urinary issues...and Charlotte assures him that everything - including the state of his urethra - is going to going to be totally A-OK. Harry stares at her lovingly and coos, "I love you, Pollyanna", and Charlotte reciprocates the sentiment as the two stroll off together. 

Over at the very busy Hotfellas bakery, an older woman is at the front of the line, brazenly staring at Guiseppe's mammoth crotch, while Carrie gives Anthony a big kudos for running such a popular business. She then heads over to her table, where Miranda and Charlotte are seated...and they're soon joined by Seema, who informs Miranda that she found another great apartment for her to look at. She specifies that it's a condominium with a no pet policy, and Miranda looks concerned about the no pet thing 'cause of how attached Joy is to her Whippets. Seema warns that there's no other option nearly as great - unless she's willing to bite the bullet and pay over the asking price on the whisper listing.

Over at Documentary Central, Lisa and Marion are working on her never-ending sheroes docuseries. When she gets a call from Chauncey, she grumbles that her husband's campaign manager has been a huge pest all week, and revolts by putting her phone on silent mode.

Aidan arrives at Carrie's townhouse mansion and thinks it'd be cute to throw pebbles at her French doors. One of the pebbles smashes through the window and shatters the glass, and the unexpected shock prompts Carrie to shriek while Aidan moans, "Fuuuuuuck.." 

As Aidan surveys the damage, Carrie lays it on thick about how much carnage her windows have had to survive since 1863. Aidan promises to replace the glass - but Carrie passively aggressively points out that the irreplaceable glass was very old, fragile, and made rainbows whenever the sun hit it at a certain angle. Aidan complains, "You're making me feel worse", and Carrie's all, "Well d'yuh that's kind of the point" and says that any new glass could never be the same as the original. Aidan grumbles that nothing is going his way, then sourly informs Carrie that Wyatt "wouldn't get on the fucking airplane" after he suddenly decided he didn't want to hang in the Wyoming wilderness for an entire week. He adds that his troubled son's change of heart prompted Kathy to cry during the entire drive back to the farm. 

Lisa is gushing to Marion about his superior editing skills [which, by the looks of it, seem pretty run-of-the-mill], and he chuckles about how his wife would be impressed by the compliment, since apparently she mostly considers him clueless. Lisa looks visibly surprised to learn that he's married, and he explains that he prefers to keep work separate from his personal life. A few seconds later, a somber looking Herbert arrives at the studio and tells Lisa he needs a minute with her...and after Marion excuses himself, Herbert tells his wife he's been trying to reach her all afternoon 'cause her father suffered a stroke. Lisa tells him she put her phone on silent mode so she could focus on editing, and assumes that her father is alive and in a hospital being treated. Herbert tells her the old man already expired, and a stunned Lisa's all, "Noooo noooo.." and bursts into tears as she collapses into Herbert's arms.

Um, it's worth mentioning here that - in in the aftermath of Big's unexpected death in Season 1, Episode 2 - Lisa tells Charlotte not to worry about forgetting that they had had lunch plans 'cause she experienced similar emotions when her father died the previous year:

Charlotte: "It just completely flew out of my head. This whole thing has just been a horrible shock. I'm just a mess. I could barely keep it together in front of the girls just now."

Lisa: "I was the exact same way when I lost my dad last year. I could see my rings literally shaking on my hands while I was trying to be so strong for them."

"Your dad had a stroke and died."

"What? Again?"

Lisa goes home to her closet office and calls Charlotte to deliver the sad news about the second death of her father...who the doctors had described as being in "amazing shape" despite his advanced age. She laments putting her phone on silent mode and not being reachable 'cause she was so busy wanking Marion as they edited her sheroes documentary, so Charlotte points out that it's "work that he raised you to do". Lisa thanks her for the kind words, then remarks on all of the emails she needs to answer. As she glances at her inbox, she suddenly spots an e-invitation from Lucille Highwater (aka the general manager of her father's theater) inviting her to his funeral. She shrieks, "Who does she think she is?!" and tells Charlotte she has to go 'cause she has an email of her own to send.

Charlotte heads over to the living room, where Harry is sitting with Mr. Burton and watching a baseball game. Charlotte coos at Harry about how much she looooooves him, then informs him that Lisa's father died suddenly. Harry's all, "Suddenly? The dude was ninety years old." Charlotte argues that his doctor had declared him to be in perfect health, and Harry quickly gets that her sudden angst is about him and his current bout with prostate cancer. Charlotte wails about how they neeeeed to enjoy every millisecond of their lives, and Harry reminds her that the last time they discussed his health issues, she had confidently assured him that everything was going to be A-OK. He says he's very sorry about Lisa's father passing away, then pleads, "Can I please have my Pollyanna back?" Charlotte agrees that, yes, she'll revert back to the most optimistic version of herself, then once again professes her deep love for him before letting him get back to his baseball game.

That evening at the mansion, Aidan is on the computer, searching for available vintage window glass in places like Scranton (Pennsylvania). He asks Carrie if she'd like to tag along on the errand, but she declines and tells him she's attending a tea at Tiffany & Co. tomorrow...then half-heartedly insists that regular glass will be just fine. She urges him to come to bed now, but he tells her he wants to spend more time scouring the Internet for rainbow-generating antique glass.

The next morning, Aidan leaves Carrie a post-it telling her he's gone to Scranton to go glass shopping.

After arriving at Tiffany & Co. for the tea event, Carrie tells Charlotte that Aidan smashed a window in her French door...and that she exacerbated the situation by going on and on about how that kind of glass is utterly irreplaceable. Charlotte tearfully shares that Lisa's father died yesterday, and Carrie clucks sympathetically and says she'd like to pay her respects to Lisa by attending the funeral. A few seconds later, Bitsy Von Muffling arrives and happily tells Charlotte and Carrie that she found her invitation to this event in her spam folder, and that she was soooooo relieved she hadn't fallen off the A-list. Charlotte then deflates this delusion when she mentions some upcoming boat party that Bitsy wasn't made aware of. Oops.

Lisa meets up with Lucille Highwater at a diner and brashly tells her she was quite taken aback when she received an invitation to her own father's funeral...which Lucille prefers to think of as a homegoing. She reminds Lisa that she's been her father's theater manager for twenty years, and that the old guy.. 

• Gifted her a red Michael Kors purse that, for whatever reason, she has placed atop the table in the diner and feels the need to make a big deal about
• Always insisted that she (Lisa) was far too busy with her slow-moving filmmaking career to be bothered with anything mundane

Lucille tells Lisa she just assumed that doing any kind of homegoing planning would be an imposition for a busy career woman such as herself - but Lisa haughtily makes it clear that overseeing the arrangements for her father's homegoing is most definitely not a bother.

"My red purse and I feel that I'm the best person to plan your father's final homegoing."

"My green purse and I have a far different opinion."

While enjoying a bite to eat at an outdoor cafe (so that Joy's dogs can accompany them on the outing), Joy tells Miranda that she's always been on the fence about hooking up with women who have children...which is probably why she never had a serious girlfriend who had birthed anyone. Miranda brightens and asks if this means she's her girlfriend, and Joy confirms she is, and quips that she wouldn't be tormenting herself in this way for a casual hookup. A few seconds later, Brady ambles over...and he politely greets Joy when Miranda introduces them, then gushes over the cuteness of her Whippets. A touched looking Joy tells Miranda, "I'm off the fence." [Even though she could have stayed on it, given that Brady is a full grown adult and resides with Steve.]

Lisa and Lucille agree that the homegoing should take place at the theater - but Lisa emphasizes that she wants it to be a simple, respectful affair. Lucille bitchily tells her she certainly has a lot of opinions for a daughter who was too busy editing to say goodbye to her father on his last day on earth...then acknowledges that she just crossed a line she prolly shouldn't have.

Carrie returns home, where a troubled looking Aidan is staring at all the vintage doors he bought back from Scranton. He glumly tells Carrie that none of the window glass makes a rainbow...then looks tortured as he confesses that he slept with Kathy the day Wyatt reneged on traveling to Wyoming. He explains that it happened 'cause they were both trying to comfort one another...but, in their defence, agree it was a mistake that won't ever be repeated. Carrie chews on that interesting development for a few seconds, then just kind of shrugs and murmurs, "I kind of understand." Aidan agonizes about betraying her - but she's all, "Meh" about it, and reminds him that they never really committed to not sleeping with other people while they wait out Wyatt's terrible teens. Aidan looks surprised by that and says he doesn't recall that being part of the ground rules, and Carrie's like, "Blah blah...it doesn't much matter, 'cause I'm going to dump you pretty soon and hit the sheets with Duncan."

Later, Carrie and Aidan are in bed together, amorously smooching.

Lisa and her black attired family solemnly exit their apartment building and climb into the series of cars that are waiting to ferry them to the theater. Seema arrives at the theater via subway and quickly meets up with Anthony, Guiseppe, Miranda, Harry and Charlotte...and then Carrie saunters over with Aidan, who had to scramble for something funeral appropriate to wear...and, despite the endless number of clothing store options in Manhattan, was somehow only able to find a suit that's several sizes too small for his tall frame. It remains unclear why Aidan felt it necessary to even attend the funeral, given that he's never even had a conversation with Lisa (at least one that I can recall).

Miranda sits next to Seema and tells her she's totes OK offering $150,000 over asking for the whisper listing apartment. When Seema asks her what brought about this change of heart, she beams while punning, "I think it'll bring me more Joy." Meanwhile, Aidan's tiny pants split right down the front, and he and Carrie giggle at the sight of his unconcealed pecker...'cause I guess the pants were too tight for him to put on underwear.

Lucille opens the Pippin-inspired homegoing with a musical performance...and then that leads into a second performance. Lisa is eventually summoned on stage to deliver a eulogy - but all she can do is lament how sad she is that she wasn't at her father's side when he passed. Herbert steps in and tries to lighten the mood by remarking on how familiar he is with his father-in-law's theater, 'cause Lisa used to drag him to every damn production.

After the homegoing, Herbert's curmudgeonly mother points out to Lisa that it's very possible her father's spirit didn't actually want her present during his final hours, 'cause he much preferred her to remember him as he was. She then hands Lisa a Belgian lace handkerchief to dab at her tears. Inside the theater, Aidan and Carrie wait for everyone to file out before they get up and conceal Aidan's embarrassing wardrobe malfunction.

The next day, Aidan canoodles Carrie as she lays in bed and promises to call as soon as he gets to Virginia. 

Aidan heads down to the kitchen and is making himself a cup of coffee when Duncan drops by to deliver Chapter 1 of his Margaret Thatcher bio for Carrie to read. Aidan promises to pass it along while looking visibly suspicious of his girlfriend's charismatic neighbor.

"Hi there. I'm your soon-to-be replacement."

"I guess I have that coming."

Later, Carrie gets out of bed and heads downstairs. She sees Duncan's chapter waiting for her atop the dining room table and stares down at it contemplatively.

Carrie is shopping in a drugstore when she happens to run into Charlotte, who's buying male Depends. When she asks whassup with her in the Depends aisle, Charlotte tears up and blurts out that Harry has prostate cancer...and that he doesn't want anyone to know. Carrie assures her she can tell her anything and that she won't tell a soul, so Charlotte reveals that the doctors caught the cancer early - but she still can't stop herself from fearing that her beloved is going to die. She then starts sobbing while Carrie envelops her in a comforting hug.
